The Sinti people

On our way home from the market in Estremoz we passed by some of the Sinti people who travel as nomads by horse and cart in the Alentejo region (central south region of Portugal). Most of the folks here call them gypsies which is a term considered by many in the world today as derogatory. Although the Sinti are part of the Roma people, they have their own traditions and dialect. I found out today that when the Roma people migrated from India a thousand years ago and arrived in Europe they were assumed to have migrated from Egypt and the first Europeans called them "gyptian" by dropping the e and then gypsy for short. I was surprised to see that some Roma people today still travel by horse and cart. I took a picture from inside the car to be discreet as to not offend.
