Roots, spikes and new directions

I've been pondering mostly the trees and soil hence the root systems with these maquettes

Then I came across this incredible thistle and have been drawn to this weird plant ever since

 It's so spiky, so protective of these soft down-like pollen grains on the inside

 

 I started adding elements to my maquettes

and referencing the upper and lower terrain
